Have You Lost or Found A Pet?

It is important that you read the following information.
    • If you have lost a pet and wish to file a lost report, please submit the form with all the appropriate information.
    • If you have found a pet and wish to file a found report, please submit the form with all the appropriate information (leave nothing blank). Remember if you have found a pet with a Multnomah Conty ID Tag, you can find the owner by typing that ID number under "Animal Searches - Lost pet license look-up" portion of the website or by calling the shelter during phone hours. Only file a found report if you are unable to reach the pet owner.
    • If you wish to search for a lost pet, you can do so under Animal Searches. You must complete all fields in order for the search to work, i.e. breed, color and sex. If your animal is a mix of several different breeds and has more than more color, you must keep changing the criteria to make your search as broad as possible. Once you have done so and possible matches show up, click on the details button to find out where animal was found and the contact information, i.e., Under Contact Information, it will either list a persons first name and phone number (that is for the finder that has submitted a found report with MCAS and are keeping animal at their premises) or it will list, contact MCAS and that is for the animals being housed at the shelter. Next you will want to click on Record number, that will give you more detailed information and also where you can retreive an animal number and call the shelter for further information if necessary.
    • Your pet could be at another agency. Dove Lewis Emergency Clinic holds pets that have been injured and have no identification. You are able to file a lost or found report via there website. Click on link below.

    • For your lost cat you will want to check with the Oregon Humane Society.

    Your Pet Is Your Responsibility

Make sure your pet is licensed and wearing its license tag.
Talk to your veterinarian about implanting a micro chip ID into your pet.
It is your responsibility to find your pet. Others can help but no one but you can truly identify your pet.

    Your Pet Is Missing?

Follow these suggestions and increase the chance of finding your pet:

    Early Action Is Best

Don't even wait a day. Unlicensed pets are kept for only 3 days, so it is important to check the Shelter as soon as you notice your pet is gone. Visit both kennel areas, the hospital ward, check the Found file and leave a Lost report at the front counter. Check Dead on Arrival files kept by our agency.

Make Sure a Lost Report Is on File

If you have a picture of your pet, bring a copy to attach to the lost card. Be sure to call to have the card removed when you find your pet.

Give An Accurate Description of Your Pet

Include size, ears, length of hair, colors, and any special markings/scars, etc. If possible bring a picture of your pet that you can leave at the Shelter.

Only You Can Positively Recognize or Identify Your Own Pet

Call and go by all of the local area shelters and animal control agencies. Multnomah County has computerized lost and found information for pet owners via website, but this does not take the place of coming to the shelter and looking in person. Do not assume that looking on the web is enough. We may have overlooked a pet or misunderstood your description.

    Look Everywhere!

As soon as you realize that your pet is missing, start looking for it. Talk to neighbors, mail carriers and children. Check for listings of animals left at veterinarians. Talk to local businesses and your letter carrier, paper delivery person, garbage hauler and neighbors.

    Advertise!

Put up signs in the neighborhood. Place ads in the local papers. If you offer a reward do not give the amount. Check the found columns, if the description is close, call. Put up notices in the area the pet was lost in. Ask elementary schools in your area to post a flier. Kids are everywhere and may see your pet.
