Director's Office:

Public Guardian:
Multnomah County Public Guardian/Conservator provides adult guardianship services under court appointment for profoundly incapacitated adults, mostly abuse victims. The program participates with the Portland State School of Social Work to provide internship opportunities for MSW students in both direct service and program administration. Students must be enrolled in the PSU MSW program. In addition to PSU requirements, candidates must pass a criminal check.

Adult Protective Services:
"APS provides protective services to adults 18 years and older who are unable to protect themselves from abuse, neglect and/or exploitation. We serve adults who are physically disabled or cognitively impaired but who do not receive services through Mental Health and Addictions Services or through Developmental Disabilities or their designee. APS also serves all residents of nursing facilities, regardless of their age." "APS has worked with PSU and Linfield College to provide internship opportunities for second year students in the MSW program at PSU and for nursing students at Linfield College. Students can expect to encounter a variety of living situations and a wide array of clients, including clients who are homeless, mentally ill and cognitively impaired. Students must be independent, adaptable and must pass a criminal background check."

Domestic Violence:
The mission of the Multnomah County Domestic Violence Coordinator's Office (DVCO) is "to promote a community commitment to provide appropriate prevention of and intervention in domestic violence through education, coordination, resource development, efficient utilization of resources, advocacy, and partnership with all parts of the community." The DVCO, founded in 1994, staffs the local County Family Violence Coordinating Council (FVCC), coordinates the United Way of Columbia-Willamette (UWCW)-funded Multnomah County Domestic Violence Enhanced Response Team (DVERT), provides technical assistance and consultation to Multnomah County and the City of Portland on domestic violence intervention, and administers $2 million for victim services.

Internship/volunteer opportunities exist in a variety of areas of our work, for example the impact of domestic violence on children and child welfare system, criminal justice system response, cost of domestic violence and coordination of multi-agency and multi-jurisdiction coordinating council, outreach and public education. We attempt to match an individual's interests with on-going work in our office. We are especially looking for individuals who are particularly interested in domestic violence from the perspective of increasing victim safety and options for victims.
