Anal Cancer

Smokers are eight times at higher risk of anal cancer than non-smokers. Exposure to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) can also increase risk of anal cancer. Anal sex without condoms with multiple partners can increase risk of getting HPV. Other risks include fistulas (abnormal openings), HIV infection, and age (most cases are in folks 50+). Best ways reduce risk are to use condoms with butt sex and quitting smoking. Anal pap smears (gentle anal swab) are recommended if you are at higher risk, have HIV, and/or are a guy who has sex with guys. Talk to your health provider about your risk and testing.
